Position Summary
JOB SUMMARY: The VUB Academic Recruiter plays a crucial role in developing programs aimed at enhancing the recruitment and academic success of veteran participants. In this position, you will administer and analyze assessments, recommend educational strategies, and motivate participants to leverage available resources. Additionally, you will cultivate robust community partnerships, attend community events, and assist the project director with overall program support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
DUTIES:
- Conduct recruitment of veterans for enrollment and participation in the VUB program.
- Assist the project director in developing educational activities and programs.
- Support participants with financial aid applications and the college admission process.
- Provide assistance with VA Education Benefits applications.
- Supervise the administration of VUB assessments and evaluations.
- Evaluate the needs of each veteran to recommend an academic course of action.
- Create a Plan and Evaluation (P&E) for each project participant to monitor progress and assess program completion.
- Conduct postsecondary follow-ups until the degree or certificate is completed.
- Offer assistance and/or tutoring in basic computer skills.
- Help with the creation and production of promotional materials for recruitment.
- Serve as a liaison between veterans, community organizations, service agencies, and governmental offices regarding veteran issues and participant needs.
- Travel to attend veteran events and community organizational meetings.
- Compile reports and provide information to the project director on participant progress and project analysis.
- Maintain and secure records of all services provided to project participants.
- Ensure the security and accuracy of project data.
- Attend seminars and training sessions by local, state, and federal agencies.
- Build effective rapport with veterans, employees, and the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the project director.
- Comply with all policies of the Alabama Community College System and the College.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Experience working with veterans and/or a background in economically or academically disadvantaged populations is required
- Master’s Degree is preferred
- Strong computer skills are strongly preferred
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Willingness to travel and provide services across the 12-county service area.
- A military background and/or connection.
- Current knowledge of VA Educational Programs.
- Experience with the college admissions process.
- Familiarity with federal grant programs.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with proven interpersonal skills.
- Experience tutoring and/or using tutorial software.

SALARY:
Salary Schedule E-4, Grade 05 ($34,298 – $51,793). Salary will be based on VERIFIED education and years of VERIFIED related experience stated on the initial job application.

Sick Leave
All staff earn one day of sick leave per month, which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave. Unused sick leave rolls over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees can convert unused sick time into service time for retirement purposes. Detailed retirement benefits can be found under Alabama Teacher’s Retirement.
Accumulation: 8 hours per month (may accumulate an unlimited number)
Annual Leave
Our regular full-time non-instructional staff earn annual leave based on their years of service:
- 0-4 years: 8 hours per month
- 5-9 years: 10 hours per month
- 10-14 years: 12 hours per month
- 15-19 years: 14 hours per month
- 20+ years: 16 hours per month
Maximum Accumulation: Up to 480 hours
Personal Leave
Regular full-time non-instructional staff are entitled to up to two (2) days of personal leave each leave year. Unused personal leave converts to sick leave if not taken.
Conversion: Converts to sick leave at the end of August each year if not used.
Professional Leave
Employees may be granted up to 10 days of professional development leave with pay each year by the President.

Retirement
The Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS) was established to provide benefits to qualified employees of state-supported educational institutions. Participation in the TRS is required for all regular full-time and part-time employees who work at least 20 hours per week.
Contribution Tiers
- Tier I: Employee pays 7.50% monthly; state matches 13.57% effective 10/01/24
- Tier II: Employee pays 6.20% monthly; state matches 12.60% effective 10/01/24
- Law Enforcement Officers:
- Tier I: Pays 8.50% monthly; state matches 13.57% effective 10/01/24
- Tier II: Pays 7.20% monthly; state matches 12.60% effective 10/01/24
Health Insurance
PEEHIP provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees. The monthly premium amounts for various plan options are as follows:
- Single: $30
- Family (without Spouse but with dependents): $207
- Employee + Spouse (no dependents): $282
- Family (with Spouse and dependents): $307
Note: Includes $100 per month spousal surcharge. The surcharge does not apply to spouses who are independently eligible for PEEHIP.
Tobacco Usage Premium
- Member: $50
- Spouse: $50
The tobacco premium applies only to the PEEHIP Hospital Medical and VIVA Health plans.
